I aim to develop my career within the countryside management sector and to become involved in a variety of specialised areas including habitat management, conservation and surveying, liasing with community groups and to promote an appreciation of our natural spaces.

I have been involved with targeted survey programmes including bat and newt (temporary GCN licence held), river monitoring, orchard protection surveys and currently appointed as a volunteer Tree Warden within my local Parish. My experience and knowledge of fresh water and marine invertebrates has led to my invitation as a member of a taxonomic steering group for the Welsh Assembly Government, in which I recently undertook a UK Taxonomic Course Audit. My knowledge and enthusiasm for the marine and coastal environment has led to my part time employment as a lecturer with the Darwin Centre, Pembrokeshire college and Van Hall Larenstein in the Netherlands,I have also been involved in research at Aberystwyth University and CCMAR Algarve.

I am willing to work anywhere in the UK on a full time basis whether it is voluntary or paid.

My particular interests are woodlands, conservation grazing and botany.

My affinity with aquatic habitats continued throughout my MSc where I chose to focus on freshwater habitats, principally lotic systems and specialize in the Trichoptera taxonomic group. My dissertation took the form of a comprehensive biodiversity survey for which I conducted a complete site Phase 1 habitat survey, Phase 2 NVC surveys on a selection of notable communities, a River Habitat Survey along the river and a complete freshwater macro invertebrate survey to determine the water quality. My final report (available upon request) included numerous maps produced in ArcMap and so I have become proficient in the use of GIS and recognize its importance in the future of this dynamic industry.

A native of the Chilterns, his career began with a cement company restoring a quarry to a nature reserve and, as a shepherd. After more than a decade managing his own environmental communications consultancy, he was invited to undertake a new and different challenge as business manager with an IFA and training school.

Gary has worked with a variety of organisations including Quercus (Portugal), Butterfly Conservation, RSPB and the Bat Conservation Trust. His diverse experience and knowledge includes being a company director and charity trustee, fundraising (£1.5 Million+ raised), communications, marketing, business and conservation management.

Personal interests range from natural history, ecology and conservation issues to enjoying a variety of good books, history and Portugal – its culture, landscapes, wildlife and wine. A very new challenge has been to become an OU student with the ambition of studying for an Open Degree in Business Management & Environmental Policy.

The area of work I am most interested in is the study and testing of contaminated land, having spent a number of months working for Newcastle City Council in the contaminated land section. My dissertation was also on the subject and involved a study of the Ouseburn area around Byker Farm in Newcastle upon Tyne. However my interests in the subject area are broad and would love to work in any environmental role.

I am a very enthusiastic, conscientious and I find it easy to fit and work within teams although I am also more than happy to use my initiative and work independently. I gained a Level 4 Diploma in Management in 2004 and have managed Rangers, Volunteers, Contractors and Community Groups. I have experience in budget management, income generation and funding bids.
